![]() ![]() Each player starts with 40 pieces made up by the flag, 5 bombs, and an assortment of 9 types of military units.Īfter these have been placed, each player takes it in turn to move their pieces. If he's lurking in Caradhras, the Balrog can ambush and destroy any member of the Fellowship foolish enough to take those abandoned tunnels through Moria. The board game Stratego is a more elaborate version of Capture the Flag. Boromir nobly sacrifices himself to remove a threat. Merry automatically kills the Witch-King. Sam's ability is that he gets a huge buff when protecting Frodo. Oh and it's really as much an absract game as Stratego is, yet feels super thematic. Every piece has its own cool ability in addition to its power number, each side has its own objective (Fellowship wants to get Frodo into Mordor, Sauron just wants to kill Frodo), and a battle card system a la Game of Thrones board game or Kemet means even when you know what an opposing piece is there's a little uncertainty and outguessing to be had. Nine pieces per side, one side is the forces of Mordor and one is the Fellowship. Just Stratego except more elegant and interesting and faster-paced. Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is exactly this. Needless to say, we did not become friends. The rest of his set up was haphazard-crazy as well. Sure enough, he had put his six bombs in the opening squares. I couldn't believe it, so I turned the board around. "Bombs can't move, remember?" I put it back in its position and said, "Just move a piece that isn't a bomb." Just take that move back and start again." Another wait. I let him move first, and his first attack turned out to be a bomb. He took a little longer to set up, even tho I gave him some strategy pointers. There was a new kid in the neighborhood, so I said Hi, Wanna play, all that stuff, and invited him inside for a game of Stratego. When I was a kid, I introduced this game to every likely lad who crossed my path. ![]() ![]() Unsurprisingly, the great Stratego variants Hera & Zeus/ Thunder and Lightning and Lord Of The Rings: The Confrontation have very few pieces and small playfields - the fronts in both of these games are three spaces wide. The 20-piece and 10-piece variants of Stratego (look up "Stratego Barrage") are much better games because they let the game start out interesting. (One of the reasons - there are many - that Stratego Legends failed as a game is that all the special powers made playing through the more-or-less-determined opening and midgame a complete slog.) How much of an advantage do you now have? At the start of the game, he reveals one of his 6's. As a thought experiment: imagine setting up to play against a good opponent. There is very little room for tactics and decision-making in the early game, because most of your pieces are trapped and much of the information you gain in the early game isn't very useful. With 40 pieces per side, most of the opening and midgame is, basically, randomly pushing the two setups against each other to determine the configuration of the endgame, which is where pretty much all of the interesting play is. The main problem with Stratego is that there's too much of it. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
